Program Launch: April-May 2023

  • An orientation for the selected students is held and classes begin. The curriculum is based on the American English File, Second Edition, Level 1, designed to improve students' skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Classes are held three days a week (Saturday, Monday, Wednesday) for 1 hour and 30 minutes per session.

  • RAWAN founder, Narwan Nzhat, applies for and receives a start-up grant for $11,000 to establish a certified 501c3 nonprofit in Massachusetts. A local law firm offers to provide pro bono legal assistance.

  • Staff provide guidance to help students overcome technical challenges including unstable internet access, electricity blackouts, and insufficient device accessibility.

  • In-person classes are launched for 120 younger students taught by six female teachers. Students receive all necessary learning materials, including books, notebooks, pens, pencils, rulers, bags, and a whiteboard. These classes were shut down by the Taliban in February 2024.
